Computer Page

I need a place to talk about tech stuff that I’m learning about, or that I’m a fan of and feel like other people ought to use or know about. I thought about starting a whole new blog, but that seems kind of ridiculous. So I’ll just add stuff here. As with the Word Page, I’ll try to do entries like a blog in that the newest posts will be at the top.

PLiska Image Resizer – an awesome, free, small, simple tool for shrinking your big digital photos (click on the title/link to go to the download page).

11/11/07 – I finally caught up in my grading (well, almost) and so I figured I’d put a quick entry on the computer page. I’ve been dealing with digital photos a lot with the blog and attendant slide shows. You’ve either been on the sending or receiving end of an email with one or more HUGE pictures where you can only see the top left corner in your internet browser without scrolling, right? That’s what happens if you don’t resize your images before uploading them. Want them to be a nice 4×6 or so size for viewing, and have them only take up 40 kilobytes instead of 3 megabytes?  Download this image resizer, named for its creator, Pedro Liska.  You can take all the images you want, drag them into the resizer, tell it if you want them all to have a prefix or suffix like “resized,” and go.  The program just cranks out the resized pics, teeny files that are perfect for not hogging all the space on your (still for the moment) free blog.

StumbleUpon – My first entry is borrowed from the Word Page – this Firefox Add-on toolbar is the bomb:

100 most commonly mispronounced words in English   This great link from dictionary.com has funny and frustrating mispronunciations that you hear all the time, like “Askteriks.”

I ran across this mispronounced words link last night using a great Firefox plugin called Stumble or StumbleUpon. You tell it the kinds of things you are interested in and then click the toolbar button. It takes you to a site it thinks you will like! Very addictive already.
